BOV vs. Aerosol vs. Pump Spray: Which Fits Your Product?
A body mist, a sunscreen spray, and a scalp treatment may all come in spray packaging, but they don’t necessarily need the same system. The right choice depends on your formula and how you want customers to apply it.
Start with the spray itself. Should it be a light mist, a focused stream, or continuous coverage over a larger area? Then compare the packaging systems that could deliver it.
How do the three spray systems work?
Bag-on-valve, or BOV: the product sits inside a bag attached to the valve. Compressed gas outside the bag pushes the product out when the valve opens. The bag separates the product from the propellant. This technical explanation of BOV describes the arrangement.
Conventional aerosol: the product and propellant share the container. In systems with a liquefied propellant, some propellant turns to gas as it is released, helping form the spray. The Aerosol Association explains the mechanism.
Manual pump: pressing a finger pump or trigger moves product through the sprayer without a pressurized can. The particular pump matters: ask to try the mechanism with your formula rather than judging it from an empty sample.
BOV is itself a type of aerosol packaging. Here, “conventional aerosol” means the system without a bag separating product and propellant.

What should customers be able to do?
Write down a few ordinary uses. A facial mist might be applied briefly as part of a skincare routine. A body product might require several passes. A scalp product may need to reach a narrow area without coating the surrounding hair.
Use those examples when testing samples. Check whether the spray lands where intended, how much effort application takes, and whether the package feels manageable in one hand. If customers will hold it sideways or upside down, test those positions with the selected system.
Keep the directions for the product in mind. A spray package does not mean every product can be sprayed directly onto every body area. Discuss the intended application before choosing a valve or writing usage instructions.
Will the formula work in the package?
Product-propellant separation is one difference between BOV and conventional aerosol. It does not answer every question about how your formula will behave. The product still has to work with the materials it touches and move through the valve and actuator—the button and outlet that create the spray.
Ask for a trial using your formula and the proposed components. Watch for an uneven spray, dripping, clogging, and changes after storage. A successful first spray is useful feedback, but the manufacturer still needs a testing plan for the finished product.

How should you compare quotes?
Request quotes for the same product size and order quantity. Ask what is included in the can or bottle, valve, bag, actuator, cap, decoration, filling, testing, and shipping. Confirm which components must be purchased in larger quantities than the first production run.
Avoid deciding from a generic claim that one system is always cheaper. A custom pump bottle and a standard pressurized can are different purchasing decisions from a stock bottle and a custom can. Your quote needs to reflect the actual components.
What should you bring to the manufacturer?
Send a product sample or formula, a description of the spray you want, target size, initial order quantity, annual volume, and launch timing. If a retail product shows the application you like, explain what you like about it: the spray width, feel, or ease of use.
