Mineral vs. Chemical Sunscreen: What Changes in Manufacturing?
Choosing mineral or chemical sunscreen changes the formulation work, not just the ingredient story on the label. The development team needs to evaluate the specific UV filters, the rest of the formula, the intended feel, and the finished package. Define the product and sales market before treating either system as the obvious choice.
“Mineral” generally refers to zinc oxide and titanium dioxide filters. “Chemical” is the familiar consumer term for organic UV filters; it does not mean mineral sunscreens contain no chemicals. What changes at the formulation bench?
With mineral filters, discuss the supplied material: powder or dispersion, its coating where applicable, and how it fits into the proposed base. For organic filters, discuss the particular ingredients and their formulation needs. Some require attention to dissolution and crystallization. The development questions in the table are a way to structure a brief. They do not establish that one group is always easier, cheaper, or more stable.
How should you describe skin feel and appearance?
Bring a reference sample and say what you like about it. “Mineral sunscreen with a light finish” is more useful when you explain whether that means easy spreading, little visible residue, low shine, or less tack after application. Identify which qualities are essential and which you can trade off.
The supporting ingredients matter. BASF describes how filter selection, emulsifiers, emollients, rheology modifiers, and film formation work together in sunscreen development. A filter name alone does not specify the customer experience. BASF’s formulation overview

Can you keep the same package when changing filters?
Treat that as a question for the development team. If you want a mineral version of an existing sunscreen, bring the current package specification and working samples with the formula brief. Ask what needs evaluation before committing to the same pump, tube, or stick component.
If you are also changing delivery format, separate that decision from the filter change. Moving a lotion into a continuous spray or a hot-filled stick adds a different set of packaging and process questions. Identify what can stay and what the team needs to investigate.
What should you confirm for the sales market?
Have the reviewer check the current rules for the intended country and the exact product. A supplier’s international example is not a US market authorization. Does choosing a filter system establish the SPF?

What makes a useful manufacturing brief?
For either path, send the target markets, proposed claims, preferred ingredients, ingredients to avoid, application and finish preferences, packaging, first-order quantity, annual demand, and target date. If you are open to alternatives, say which part of the brief can change.
